Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality This should have been a favorite but is a big disappointment due to poor quality machining. The machine sook violently until I remachined two pulleys to make then run true. The Chuck wobbled until I replaced it with a high quality Jack’s. The quill is still loose and there is no way short of totally altering the casting to eliminate that wobble. Searching for an older clausing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overpriced Disappointment My biggest complaint about this expensive drill press is that the Variable Speed adjustment mechanism is an outdated Reeves pulley system that is cumbersome and increasingly difficult to use. It takes two hands and a STRONG person to crank the hand wheel that adjusts the speed. I cannot understand why Powermatic chose such a poor mechanism for speed adjustment when electronic variable speed motor systems are in common use in so many tools now, including the Jet and Powermatic lathes.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Powermatic - PM2800 DRILL PRESS Bought this machine from a local tool company in Salt Lake. Worked great for the first 7-8 months then started to loose power and had sporadic speed control. After reading a few reviews on line it is confirmed the upper pulley on the main shaft becomes locked due to belt fragments between the shaft and pulley. Was extremely hard to free the pulley and consequently the belt(s) shreds itself of material which in turn gums up the shaft. Took some time to get the pulley free from the shaft. The pulley really needs a stronger spring to keep the pulley from becoming locked on the shaft. I could have bought 4 standard drill press machines for the same price with less or no trouble. Definitely has its design flaws!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great idea, needs work on design flaw Bought this drill press for our university scene shop about two years ago. Worked FANTASTIC for a year and a half. Then, the rpm seemed to suddenly be limited to 1800 rpm tops, the drive shaft to the chuck would sometimes stop turning altogether, and there would be significant loss of power upon material entry (way more than normal). Upon investigation, it seems it is the same issue many other users have encountered. Because of the ingenious design of the variable speed (not being sarcastic, it's wonderful to not have to do it manually!), it does have some drawbacks. It puts a TON of strain on the belts causing a bunch of belt particles to deposit all over the inside of the housing (1/8" thick at least). Some of these particles apparently get trapped between the center spindle and the center double belt drive pulley, causing it to freeze up when it is supposed to move up and down that spindle to keep better tension on the belts. Spoke with a tech from jpw industries and they are sending someone out to repair it under warranty. Their techs gave me a call back both times within an hour or two and were very knowledgeable and helpful. Again, because of the auto tension feature, this seems to be a minor setback that might be addressed in development if some type of seal were installed into the pulley to keep particles out. Even with this issue, it is way less time to clean off that spindle once or twice a year than to manually adjust a tensioner to change speeds between differing materials every single time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great-no issues I have had this drill press for seven years with no issues at all. I appreciate all of the features that are included with this drill press. I do think it is important and follow the instructions and only adjust the speed while the drill is running, That may be part of me not having any issues. My only nit is I wish that the stop switch turned it off completely. I added a switch to the outlet to accomplish that.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Variable Speed Issues We have 1 of these in a middle school shop. Has had issues with variable speed control and total loss of power due to belts slipping. Have had it looked at once during first year and now I need to get it fixed again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has issues We have three of these in our university wood shop and are not very happy with the performance. The variable speed belt wears our quickly and the pulleys get frozen on the shaft so that the speed is impossible to adjust. We are looking to replace them.
